How to downsize your belongings

If it weren't for downsizing, we'd all be on Storage Wars.

Whether you're moving to a new home, there's been a death in the family, or you just need to curb your pack-rat nature, there are many reasons to want to downsize.

Usually, when we move to a new place (especially when that space is smaller), it's time to step back and see what we need to get rid of.

If you've been wondering how to downsize your belongings, then we've got some great tips in store for you!

Categorize Your Stuff

When downsizing your stuff, you need to make sure that everything is split up into categories.

Clothes need to be in the closet or dresser, tools need to be in the garage, pictures need to be in albums, electronics should be in separate bins, etc.

A lot of this may already be done if you're even halfway organized, but it's important to make sure items aren't crossing paths. This will all help you more than you think later on.

Study Your New Space

You're not going to know how to downsize your life until you understand where you're moving. Hopefully, you've already seen the new space in person. If not, bust out some blueprints.

Check the square footage of the entire house and compare the square footage of individual rooms to what you currently have.

This will give you a good idea of what will and won't fit.

Quiz Yourself on Everything

Here's where you need to get down to the nitty-gritty.

Go through every room of your house. Go through every stack, pile, bin, etc. that you have categorized your belongings into and ask yourself important questions.

This is where you need to be honest with yourself.

Clothing

For clothing, ask yourself whether or not you've worn something in the past 12 months.

In the past 12 months, you will have experienced every season. You would have had every opportunity to wear everything in your closet and drawers. If there's something you know you haven't worn, donate it or sell it.

Electronics

Electronics come and go and they tend to lose value quickly.

If there's something you clearly don't use, consider recycling your electronics or selling them for some extra moving cash.

The Big Stuff

We're talking:

  • Appliances

  • Beds

  • Dressers

  • Furniture

Determine whether or not these are things you can buy for your new home. If you think you'll be replacing it when you move anyway, try to sell it now.

If you need to move quickly, this is a good way to make a spontaneous move easier and faster.
